Week 4.2 Hikikomori – social trend or cultural trend

From my technorati search on hikikomori and Japanese culture, I have come across Minus-one’s blog entry on the film “All About Lily Chou-Chou“. It reminded me that the film was a groundbreaking presentation of the hikikomori phenomenon in Japan, linking it to violence and bullying at school.

Although there is no other student in HKU interested in doing the topic, I found a Baptist University’s journalism students group blog from technorati where they had a couple of relevant entries on hikikomori in Hong Kong which is similar to my earlier post on 9 Feb 2007. Perhaps it is a chance for some cross-campus collaboration.

Also from technorati is an overview by Observing Japan on the social trend in Japan.

Then I made my way to flickr and see what I could find there. Interesting enough, I have found a discussion group on hikikomori and a person who identified him/herself as a hikikomori. Maybe I will follow on that and see if I can get some interesting conversations.

Also from flickr, there is one photo by photographer Stuart Isett that was particularly striking. The photo was from his “Japan Story” set which includes photographs taken in Japan over five years, mainly for The New York Times and Time Magazine.

Finally, I did a last search on google and found some very useful resources from a blog called Cultural Analysis 2005, the blog linked me to the following reference articles:
